In a randomized controlled trial, METR found that experienced developers finished real tasks 19% slower when allowed to use AI tools. Yet they estimated the tools had made them 20% faster.
The AI industry told us we'll become obsolete, called software a commodity and now is trying to "augment" us with piles of markdown skills and confusing tools.
And it keeps telling us that the world is rapidly changing, chipping bit by bit at our professional identity.
But it doesn't mean that AI is completely useless, though it needs to be grounded in the reality of software development to reap the benefits of automation.
Seasoned developers who lived through more than one transformation managed to adapt to it easily and made AI yet another tool in their belt.
And so can you.

About the author

I've been working in the tech industry for over 18 years. I've built small e-commerce websites and blogs and huge webstores for big brands and publishers. I've built mobile apps and distributed systems, and I'm currently leading a team of 16 developers in one of the largest hospitality companies in the Nordics.
I have written over a hundred passionate tech articles throughout the years, which were read by over 150,000 people on Dev.to alone (and liked by thousands of them).
I've spoken at meetups, facilitated workshops and coached developers from interns to seniors.
But most importantly, I have witnessed firsthand what AI hype does to one's sense of self and motivation. I gathered what I learned over the years and I hope that this book will allow me to spread this knowledge further than my 1-1s can.
